[Joseph Smith, Jr., Prophet and first President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is the primary subject of several entries and is mentioned prominently in many more. In company with Oliver Cowdery, Oliver, Joseph Smith received divine authority; see Aaronic Priesthood: Restoration, and Melchizedek Priesthood: Restoration of Melchizedek Priesthood. Thus authorized, they proceeded with the Organization of the Church, 1830. Joseph Smith's mission focused on the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, including the First Principles of the Gospeland its Ordinances; he encouraged the Gathering of the Saints and laid the foundation for the establishment of Zionand the New Jerusalemin preparation for the Second Coming of Christ.
